Choosing the Right Wetsuit Thickness
Wetsuits are available in different neoprene thicknesses, with the most suitable choice depending on water temperature, dive duration and your personal tolerance to cold.
3mm wetsuits are generally suited to warmer tropical waters, providing lightweight thermal protection and excellent freedom of movement.
5mm wetsuits offer additional insulation and are a popular choice for moderately warm water, including some Mediterranean diving conditions.
7mm wetsuits provide greater thermal insulation and are commonly chosen for cooler water diving, including some UK diving conditions.
For additional warmth, some divers choose semi-dry wetsuits, which incorporate improved seals around the neck, wrists and ankles to reduce water circulation inside the suit.
Why Wetsuit Fit Matters
A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water between the neoprene and your skin. Your body warms this water, while the neoprene provides insulation and helps reduce heat loss.
A wetsuit that's too loose allows excessive water movement, reducing its effectiveness. One that's too tight can restrict movement and make breathing uncomfortable.
