If you've been diving for a while, you've probably heard other divers talking about Nitrox. Perhaps you've noticed Nitrox cylinders on a dive boat or seen enriched air offered on a liveaboard holiday.
But what exactly is Nitrox, and why do so many divers choose to use it?
Enriched air Nitrox is a breathing gas containing a higher percentage of oxygen and a lower percentage of nitrogen than normal air. By breathing less nitrogen during a dive, you can potentially extend your no-decompression limits, particularly on repetitive dives.
This can be especially useful when exploring reefs, enjoying multiple dives during a holiday or planning a diving itinerary where you want to make the most of your available bottom time.
However, Nitrox also introduces important considerations, including oxygen exposure limits and maximum operating depths. Understanding these is a fundamental part of the course.

How Does the Course Work?
The PADI Enriched Air Diver course combines convenient online learning with practical, instructor-led training.
Step 1 – Complete Your PADI eLearning
Start with your PADI Enriched Air Diver eLearning, which allows you to work through the theory at your own pace.
You'll explore the benefits of Nitrox, dive planning considerations, oxygen exposure and the procedures used when diving with enriched air.
Step 2 – Practical Training with Your Instructor
Once you've completed your eLearning, you'll attend a practical training session with one of our experienced PADI instructors.
We'll show you how to analyse a Nitrox cylinder, verify the oxygen percentage, understand cylinder identification procedures and configure your dive computer appropriately.
This is an opportunity to ask questions and become comfortable with the procedures you'll use whenever you dive with enriched air.
Step 3 – Earn Your PADI Enriched Air Diver Certification
Once you've successfully completed the required knowledge development and practical assessments, you'll earn your internationally recognised PADI Enriched Air Diver certification.
No open-water dives are required to qualify.
An Ideal Winter Scuba Diving Course
Not everyone wants to spend the colder months diving in British waters, but that doesn't mean your scuba diving education has to stop.
The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is particularly well suited to winter training because you can complete the entire certification without entering the water.
It's also an excellent way to prepare for a forthcoming diving holiday, Red Sea liveaboard or a return to regular diving when the weather improves.
Who Can Take This Course?
To enrol, you must:
- Be at least 12 years old.
- Hold a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification or an accepted qualifying certification from another training organisation.
- Meet the applicable PADI course participation and medical requirements.
You don't need previous Nitrox diving experience.
What's Included in Your £150 Course?
Your PADI Enriched Air Diver course includes:
- PADI Enriched Air Diver eLearning.

Optional Practical Diving Experience
Learning how Nitrox works is one thing. Putting that knowledge into practice on a real dive is another.
Although no diving is required to complete your PADI Enriched Air Diver certification, we offer an optional practical diving package for those who would like to experience using Nitrox underwater.
Join our friendly instructors for two Nitrox training dives, where you'll have the opportunity to apply what you've learned during your course.
You'll practise preparing for Nitrox dives, checking your breathing gas, configuring your dive computer and planning your dives using enriched air.
It's a great opportunity to build familiarity with Nitrox diving procedures before using enriched air independently on future diving adventures.
Your Optional Diving Package Includes
- Two instructor-led Nitrox dives: Put your training into practice with guidance from our experienced instructors.
- Two Nitrox cylinder fills: Your enriched air fills are included.
- Scuba equipment rental: The diving equipment needed for your training dives is provided.
The practical diving package can be booked alongside your PADI Enriched Air Diver course or separately at a later date.
